Family Learning Workshop - EMAS

A two hour family workshop for white British and ethnic minority parents took place at St Edmund’s Catholic School on 9th March. The session was delivered by two staff from the Community Learning Team, Ruth Nabbholz-Duncan and Karen Thomas.  The aim of the event was to foster intercultural communication with an emphasis on raising parental aspirations for their children and ensuring parents are well equipped to support their children’s learning. The families were recruited from Year 7 pupils. The group enjoyed sharing educational histories, comparisons between educational settings, times and countries. The EMAS team also introduced teaching and learning styles and provided questionnaires for the parents to carry out with their children.

Headteacher Mrs O Mara said of the event: "The number of ethnic minority groups in our community is increasing bringing so much richness and diversity from which we can all learn. This was a first for the school-the first of many we hope. It was very much enjoyed by the parents who attended."
