Independent Work Tasks

September 2006

Dear Parent,

Following the comments from pupils and parents about Homework, we are pleased to present this document for 2006-7.

Please take time to study this document and keep it in a safe place so that it can be referred to often in the coming months. this document should be used in conjunction with the homework time-table and homework diary.

St. Edmund’s is committed to developing pupils’ capacity for independent work and personal organisation; therefore all the homework topics for pupils in Years 7-9 are contained in a booklet, with deadlines set by teachers for submitting completed work. Teachers expect a high level of research, development and presentation in each piece of work and that deadlines need to be adhered to, with sanctions given to those who miss them.

Pupils can expect that teachers will give guidance in class about what and how to complete the homework successfully. When this guidance is given it should be written, with the title and the deadline for completion, in the homework diary. Following marking, the teacher may wish to spend time discussing the results and setting targets for improvement.

At the end of each term, the assessment results that are sent to you will be based on the pupil’s classwork and homework. These assessment results should be compared with the target level to see whether the right progress is being made.

The publication of homework in advance can make a substantial contribution to improving the quality of pupils’ work. We would urge you to take a close interest in your child’s work throughout the year by following their progress.

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant Pastoral Leader or Mrs M Howorth, Head of Key Stage 3, because it is by working together that we can ensure that each pupil works to the best of their ability.

Yours sincerely
