FRENCH

Examination Board:  WJEC

Coursework: 25%       Reading: 25%
Listening: 25%          Speaking (Individual test): 25%

The acquisition of a GCSE in a Modern Foreign Language will undoubtedly be important whatever your chosen career.  A skill in French could be your passport to a better job either here or abroad.  Alternatively, being able to communicate in another language could ensure that your future foreign holidays are truly enjoyable and not fraught with misunderstanding!

The course in French is a continuation of work in Years 7 to 9 and builds upon it.
The content of the 2-year course covers the four topic areas:

  • Everyday Activities
  • Personal and Social Life
  • The World Around Us
  • The World of Work
  • The International World

Great emphasis is placed on active oral work for effective communication and you will also extend your skills in listening, reading and writing in French.  These skills, whether they are modest or highly developed, will be of benefit to all of you in your lives to come, be it for personal pleasure, for all sorts of work in Europe, for holidays and travel.

GCSE French will be of value in itself and as a base for further studies post-16.

Assessment is via regular unit tests with examinations at the end of Year 10 and Mocks in Year 11.  Individual tests are important.  The differentiated entry pattern depends on assessed work during the two-year course: final grades depend on the final examinations.  Coursework will be adopted by the Department as an alternative to the written examination.

LIPS - Language Initiative in Portsmouth

LIPS provides "twilight" courses at Miltoncross School in Italian and Spanish.  They are held on two days a week (4.00 p.m. - 5.15. p.m.) at present on Mondays and Thursdays.

In Year 10 we hope all students will have the opportunity to take part in a week long exchange or trip to France.  This can be an invaluable way of improving their spoken French and understanding of the customs and culture of France

Further information and application forms will be available later in the year from the Department
