As in the first three years, the purpose of your studies in English is to develop your ability to speak and write, both accurately and in an interesting way, and to develop your ability to read and respond to a wide range of texts, both literary and non-literary.
In Years 10 and 11 you will be studying for two examinations: English and English Literature. Coursework pieces will be completed during these two years. These will contribute to your final grades.
At the beginning of Year 10, you will be placed in a teaching set. The difficulty of the work will depend upon the set you are in, but everyone will have a chance to work for GCSE grades A* - G. The examination papers are tiered, however. At the end of the course, therefore, you will be entered either for the Higher Tier (awarding Grades A* - D) or the Foundation Tier (awarding Grades C - G). Your teacher will decide which tier is the most appropriate to your abilities based on your work and achievements during the course. In all sets, the course will be based on the reading of a wide variety of texts, including novels, plays, poetry, non-fiction, as well as media texts. You will also study literature from other cultures and other times. You will also do a great deal of writing on this, both creative and factual, from which your best work will be chosen. In all groups there will be an opportunity for a variety of oral work - individually and in pairs or groups. This again counts towards your final assessment.
The course should be very enjoyable for everyone, because it allows you to work at your own level of interest and will reward you for doing the best that you can. There will be theatre and cinema trips, as appropriate.
Throughout the course you will be expected to use Information Technology to help with the presentation of your coursework and carry out research.
You will be provided with a course anthology, but you are advised to purchase the one set Literature book. Both of these you can annotate and take with you into the examination. Your teacher will advise you about this at the beginning of the course.
